Day 14 Lab: Time Intelligence and Visuals Together

A year-on-year page built by the whole class, the Solo Project handed in, and the Pod Project released.

By the end of today you can

  • Build a year-on-year report page from Day 12's measures and Day 13's visuals
  • Show growth as a percentage in a sorted bar chart
  • Colour a table by its values with conditional formatting
  • Hand in the Solo Project
  • Meet your pod and start the Pod Project

Two days, one page. Today the time intelligence measures and the visuals meet, and the question is the one every manager asks at the start of a year: "Were we better than last year, and where?"

Lab rules as always: every number below must match before the class moves on. Open your Day 13 file, add a page called Year on Year, and add a Date[Year] slicer set to 2024.

1. The Top Row: Three Cards

With 2024 selected, [Total Revenue] is 2024 and [Revenue LY] is 2023. No year is typed into any formula: the slicer says 2024 and the measures work out the rest.

The class build

1.Slicer: Date[Year] › Select 2024
2.Card: [Total Revenue] › Card: [Revenue LY] › Card: [Revenue YoY %]
What we are checkingWe want the three cards the page opens with, with 2024 selected on the slicer.
Checkpoint: cards, 2024 selected
₦88.8M
Total Revenue
₦57.1M
Revenue LY
+55.6%
Revenue YoY %

2. This Year Against Last Year, by Month

Day 12's line chart, now on the page with the cards. Date[Month] on the X-axis; [Total Revenue] and [Revenue LY] in the Y-axis well. Title it with the finding.

What this visual showsWe want the gap between the two lines to show the growth month by month.
Line chart, 2024 selected

3. Where Did We Grow? Growth by Station

Definition

A percentage in a bar chart ranks growth rather than size. The biggest station is not always the fastest-growing, and a manager needs to see both.

Real-Life Example

The best student in a class is not always the one who improved most. A school prize for "most improved" uses a different ranking from "top of the class".

Click path

1.Clustered bar chart › Y-axis: Station_Master[StationName] › X-axis: [Revenue YoY %]
2.Sort axis › Revenue YoY %, descending
What this visual showsWe want the stations ranked by how much they grew, not by how big they are.
Bar chart, 2024 selected

Independence Layout Filling Station grew fastest; GRA Filling Station is the biggest. They are different stations, which is exactly why this chart is on the page as well as Day 13's.

4. Growth by Product, with Colour That Means Something

Definition

Conditional formatting colours a cell by its value: green for high growth, red for low. Colour that carries meaning is the one kind of colour Day 13 allowed.

Click path

1.Table: Product_Master[ProductName], [Total Revenue], [Revenue LY], [Revenue YoY %]
2.Format visual › Cell elements › Series: Revenue YoY % › Background color: on
3.fx › Format style: Gradient › Lowest value: red › Highest value: green
What we are checkingWe want each product's growth, with the Revenue YoY % cells coloured from red (lowest) to green (highest). The order below is highest growth first.
Checkpoint: table, 2024 selected
ProductTotal RevenueRevenue LYRevenue YoY %
PMS (Petrol)₦41,226,025₦23,129,524+78.2%
DPK (Kerosene)₦9,325,719₦6,375,943+46.3%
Engine Oil₦3,341,453₦2,306,196+44.9%
AGO (Diesel)₦34,405,374₦24,800,570+38.7%
Grease₦499,126₦444,297+12.3%
Total₦88,797,696₦57,056,529+55.6%

PMS (Petrol) grew fastest and Grease slowest. Check Day 9's prices before explaining it: most of this is the pump price, not more customers.

Try This

Add a second slicer on Station_Master[Region] and click South South. Every visual on the page must change. Which product grew fastest at GRA Filling Station, the only South South station?

Hint: you are checking your relationships again. If the product table does not change, the Stations relationship is missing or inactive.

5. Solo Project Hand-In

The Solo Project is due today. Before you paste your links, check:

  • The .pbix opens on another laptop (send it to a classmate and have them open it).
  • The cards match the self-check on the brief.
  • The findings are written for Chiamaka, and the self-check says honestly where you got stuck.
  • Every link is set to "Anyone with the link can view".

6. The Pod Project Is Released

Today your pod receives the Pod Project: Jade Hotels & Resorts. Five hotels, six booking channels, a year of bookings, and a client with two sharp questions. You present on Day 16.

Read the Brief With Your Pod Today

The full brief, the dataset, the roles and the marking are on the Pod Project page, the next lesson in this course. Agree who does what before you leave class.

Do This Now

  1. Build the Year on Year page: slicer, three cards, the line chart.
  2. Build the growth-by-station bar chart, sorted.
  3. Build the product table with the coloured growth column.
  4. Do the Try This.
  5. Hand in the Solo Project.
  6. Read the Pod Project brief with your pod and split the roles.

Checkpoint

Q1. The Year slicer is on 2024. Why does [Revenue LY] show 2023 without 2023 in its formula?

SAMEPERIODLASTYEAR moves whatever dates are selected back one year.

Q2. Why show growth by station as well as revenue by station?

Because the biggest station is not always the fastest-growing. They answer different questions.

Q3. When is colour allowed in a table?

When it carries meaning, such as conditional formatting from low to high.

Tick Before You Move On

  • ☐ The three cards show ₦88.8M, ₦57.1M and +55.6%
  • ☐ The growth bar chart is sorted, highest first
  • ☐ The product table has a coloured growth column
  • ☐ My Solo Project links are handed in
  • ☐ My pod has read the Pod Project brief and split the roles

Quick Recap

A year slicer plus time intelligence measures: no years typed into formulas. Revenue ranks size; growth ranks improvement. Show both. Conditional formatting is colour with a meaning. Solo Project in today; Pod Project out today, presented on Day 16.

Final Scenario

The managing director asks, "Which station should I reward this year?"

Your page gives her two honest answers: GRA Filling Station for the most money, and Independence Layout Filling Station for the biggest improvement. She chooses, and you did not have to guess what she wanted.

A good page gives the reader both sides and lets them decide.

Next: the Pod Project brief, then Day 15: slicers, drill-through and storytelling.
