Webbo3 Power BI · Cohort 1 · Assignment 3 · Released Day 13 · Due Day 15
Assignment 3: A One-Page Webbo Oil Dashboard
Four visuals on one page that answer a manager's first four questions, and change together when she clicks.
By the end of today you can
- Choose and build a KPI card, a bar chart, a trend line and a slicer
- Lay them out on one page that reads top to bottom
- Check that every visual responds to the slicer
- Title each visual with what it shows
Days 8 to 13 gave you measures and visuals. Assignment 3 puts them on one page, for one reader: the Webbo Oil operations manager, who has two minutes.
The Brief
Build a one-page Webbo Oil dashboard with a KPI card, a bar chart, a trend line and a slicer. Every visual must respond to the slicer. Hand in the .pbix and a screenshot.
Use your class file from Days 7 to 13: its model and measures are the starting point. Add a new page called Dashboard and build everything on it.
What Must Be on the Page
| Visual | What it shows | Done when |
|---|---|---|
| KPI card | [Total Revenue], in millions | Top left, the first thing seen |
| Second card (your choice) | Transactions, Average Sale or Revenue YoY % | Beside the first card |
| Bar chart | Total Revenue by station | Sorted largest first, data labels on |
| Trend line | Total Revenue by month, from the Date table | Months in calendar order, one line per year or one line over both years |
| Slicer | Date[Year], Station_Master[Region] or Product_Master[Category] | Clicking it changes every other visual |
- Titles: every visual has a title a manager would understand.
- Layout: cards along the top, the bar chart and the line below, the slicer at the side or top. Line things up (Format, Align).
- No clutter: no pies, no 3D, no more than two colours in any one chart unless colour means something.
Check Yourself
Either its field comes from a table the slicer cannot reach (check the relationship), or its interaction was switched off. Select the slicer, then Format, Edit interactions, and make sure each visual shows the filter icon, not the "none" icon. Day 15 covers this properly.
What to Hand In, by Day 15
- YourName_Assignment3.pbix as a Google Drive link, set to "Anyone with the link can view".
- Two screenshots of the Dashboard page: one with nothing selected, one with a slicer value selected.
- Two sentences: the most important thing the page tells the manager.
How It Is Marked
| Criterion | Marks | What the tutor checks |
|---|---|---|
| The four required visuals | 40 | KPI card, bar chart, trend line, slicer, each built correctly |
| Responds to the slicer | 20 | Every visual changes; the self-check numbers match |
| Right visual, well formatted | 20 | Sorted bars, calendar months, display units, data labels |
| Layout and titles | 10 | Reads top to bottom, aligned, titles that say something |
| The two sentences | 10 | A real finding, taken from the page |
Questions You Will Have
Can I add more than four visuals?
Yes, if each one earns its place. A crowded page loses marks under layout; a fifth visual that answers a real question does not.
Which slicer should I use?
Any of the three. Year is the most useful for this data, because it shows the growth.
My months show in the wrong order.
Sort Date[Month] by Date[Month Number] (Day 7), and make sure the axis field comes from the Date table, not from Sales.
Tick Before You Move On
- ☐ A KPI card top left, in millions
- ☐ A sorted bar chart and a calendar-order trend line
- ☐ A slicer that changes every other visual
- ☐ My numbers match the self-check in all three states
- ☐ The .pbix, two screenshots and two sentences are ready as links
Quick Recap
One page, one reader, four visuals. Cards on top, charts below, a slicer that reaches everything. Check three slicer states against the self-check. Hand in by Day 15.
Final Scenario
The operations manager opens your page, clicks 2024, then South West.
Every number moves together, the bar chart re-ranks, and she has her answer before her tea cools.
That is what a dashboard is for.
Next, Day 14 Lab: time intelligence and visuals together. The Solo Project is due, and the Pod Project is released.
