Start Here: How the Excel Track Works
Five weeks, twenty classes, two datasets and one pod project. Read this once before Week 1 and you will always know where you are and what comes next.
By the end of this class you can
- Explain how the five weeks are organised and what changes after Week 1
- Tell the difference between a live class and a virtual class, and what each expects of you
- Download the TechPlug Sales Workbook and know what Verdant Foods Nigeria is for
- Check that your Excel can do everything this track needs
- Read every lesson pane: the formula bar, the grid, the click paths
This track teaches you to take a messy spreadsheet and turn it into a decision. Not to memorise buttons: to look at a business's data, see what is wrong with it, fix it, ask it questions and show the answer on one page that a manager can act on.
Everything here was built for beginners. If you have never written a formula, you are in the right place. If you have, Week 1 will still change how you think about the formulas you already know.
1. How This Track Is Organised
| The rule | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| 5 weeks, 20 classes | Every week has 2 live classes and 2 virtual classes, always in the order Live 1, Virtual 1, Live 2, Virtual 2. |
| Week 1 is different | Week 1 is about data analysis itself. There are no formulas yet. You need to understand why before you touch the tool. |
| Two datasets | The TechPlug Sales Workbook is used in every class for teaching and practice. Verdant Foods Nigeria is used only for your pod project. |
| The pod project runs Weeks 2 to 5 | Each week you apply that week's skills to Verdant Foods. By Week 5 you have one complete analytics project, from a raw file to a dashboard. |
Live Classes and Virtual Classes
A live class is taught by your tutor in real time. You watch, you follow along on your own laptop, and you ask questions while the idea is fresh. Each live class has a lesson page here, so you can read it before class to prepare, or after class to go over what you missed.
A virtual class is your independent practice time. Nobody is teaching; you are doing. The lesson page tells you exactly what to build, step by step, and shows you what your screen should look like when you are right. Virtual classes are where the learning sticks, so do not skip them.
Keep Excel open beside the lesson and do every step yourself as you read. Reading about a formula teaches you almost nothing. Typing it, getting it wrong and fixing it teaches you everything.
2. The Five Weeks at a Glance
| Week | Theme | Live classes | Virtual classes | Pod task |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Data analysis foundation | What is data analysis? The Excel interface, data types, importing a CSV | The workflow in real life. Spotting data quality issues | None. You are orienting yourself |
| 2 | Data cleaning and text functions | Duplicates and blanks. TRIM, PROPER, CLEAN, FIND, SUBSTITUTE | Blank handling and LEFT, RIGHT, MID, LEN. Text cleaning practice | Clean the Verdant Foods data |
| 3 | Formulas and analysis functions | How formulas work, SUM to MAX, IF, IFS, AND, OR. SUMIFS, COUNTIFS, AVERAGEIFS | Calculated columns and conditional formatting. Conditional aggregation practice | Analyse Verdant Foods: 8 business questions |
| 4 | Lookups, PivotTables and Power Query | VLOOKUP, XLOOKUP, INDEX and MATCH. PivotTables, PivotCharts, slicers, Power Query | Lookups and data validation. PivotTable practice | Build the Verdant Foods dashboard |
| 5 | Dashboard design, review and submission | Dashboard design principles. Track review and SQL preview | Review and peer feedback. Final pod review | Submit the complete workbook |
Notice the rhythm. A live class introduces an idea. The virtual class after it makes you use that idea on your own. The last virtual class of each week moves the same skill onto your pod project. By the time you touch Verdant Foods, you have already done the same thing twice on TechPlug.
3. Dataset 1: The TechPlug Sales Workbook
TechPlug sells electronics from 10 branches across Nigeria: Lagos Island, Lagos Mainland, Ibadan, Kano, Kaduna, Enugu, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Warri and Jos. Its workbook records 1,070 sales from 1 January to 31 March 2024, one row per sale. You will open it in Week 1, clean it in Week 2, question it in Week 3, look things up and summarise it in Week 4, and present it in Week 5.
The workbook has four tabs:
| Tab | What it holds |
|---|---|
| Cleaning Process | Ten steps, in order, for cleaning the Sales Data sheet. Week 2 follows them |
| Sales Data | The 1,070 sales, with real mistakes in them. Almost every class uses it |
| Product Catalogue | All 20 products: ID, name, category, brand, price, VAT and warranty. Week 4 looks things up in it |
| Staff Directory | All 10 sales staff: ID, name, branch, region, zone, manager and contract. Week 4 looks things up in it too |
The Sales Data sheet has twelve columns:
| Column | What it holds | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Transaction_ID | A code for each sale, such as TP-0892 | Text |
| Date | The day of the sale | Date |
| Product_ID | The product's code in the Product Catalogue, PRD-001 to PRD-020 | Text |
| Product_Name | From a Logitech mouse to an iPhone 14 | Text |
| Category | Accessories, Appliances, Laptops, Smartphones, Televisions | Text |
| Quantity | How many units were sold | Number |
| Unit_Price | The price of one unit, in Naira | Number |
| Staff_ID | The seller's code in the Staff Directory, EMP-001 to EMP-010 | Text |
| Staff_Name | Who made the sale | Text |
| Branch | Where the sale happened | Text |
| Customer_Type | Retail, Wholesale or Corporate | Text |
| Payment_Method | Cash, POS, Transfer or Credit | Text |
The Sales Data sheet is not perfect, on purpose. Real data never is. Finding what is wrong with it is your Week 1 virtual class, so we will not spoil it here.
TechPlug Sales Workbook: download the files
Download everything as one zip file (techplug-sales-workbook.zip)
- TechPlug_Sales_Workbook.xlsx: the workbook every class uses: Cleaning Process, Sales Data, Product Catalogue and Staff Directory
- TechPlug_Sales_Data.csv: the Sales Data sheet on its own as a CSV, for the Week 1 import lesson
- TechPlug_Sales_Data_Cleaned.csv: Sales Data after the cleaning, for anyone catching up from Week 3
- TechPlug_Product_Catalogue.csv: the Product Catalogue sheet as a CSV
- TechPlug_Staff_Directory.csv: the Staff Directory sheet as a CSV
Save the files in one folder you can find again, for example Documents > Webbo3 Excel Track. Keep the downloaded workbook untouched as your original, and work on a copy.
4. Dataset 2: Verdant Foods Nigeria (Your Pod Project)
Verdant Foods Nigeria makes packaged food: drinks, snacks, cereals and condiments sold across five regions. Its file has 470 rows and ten columns, and it has four kinds of problems baked in deliberately: duplicate rows, blank quantities, inconsistent category names and dates in the wrong format.
Your tutor sends it at the start of Week 2, before your first class that week, and the Week 2 pod task page has the download link. With your pod, you will:
| Week | What your pod does with Verdant Foods |
|---|---|
| 2 | Cleans it, and records every fix in a Cleaning Log |
| 3 | Adds a Revenue column and answers 8 business questions with formulas |
| 4 | Builds a one-page dashboard from it |
| 5 | Improves the dashboard from feedback and submits the whole workbook |
Why a second dataset? Because following your tutor on TechPlug proves you can follow. Doing the same work on a file nobody has cleaned for you proves you can do it. That second thing is what an employer is paying for.
5. Setting Up Excel
Which Excel Do You Have?
Open Excel, then File > Account and look under Product Information. Every function in this track works in Microsoft 365, Excel 2021 and Excel 2024. Two of them are newer than some laptops:
| Your Excel | IFS (Week 3) | XLOOKUP (Week 4) | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Microsoft 365, Excel 2021 or 2024 | Yes | Yes | Nothing. You are ready |
| Excel 2019 | Yes | No | Use nested IF and INDEX + MATCH, which the lessons also teach, or use Excel for the web for Week 4 |
| Excel 2016 or older | No | No | Use Excel for the web for the whole track |
| Excel for the web (free) | Yes | Yes | Go to office.com, sign in with any Microsoft account, open Excel |
It is free, it runs in your browser, and it has every function this track uses. PivotTables, slicers and conditional formatting all work. The only feature you will miss is the full Power Query editor, which gets a 15-minute introduction in Week 4 and is taught properly in the Power BI track.
On a Mac
Everything works the same. Where a lesson says Ctrl, press Cmd. The ribbon tabs have the same names, though a few buttons sit in slightly different places; when in doubt, use the search box at the top of the Excel window and type the name of the button.
6. How to Read the Lessons
There is no programming in this track, so you will not see code editors. Every example is drawn as the part of Excel you are looking at. Before each one, a strip tells you what the example is for. Here is one from Week 3, so you know how to read it:
| Part of the pane | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| The green title bar | Which workbook you are in |
| The box on the left (Name Box) | Which cell is selected. Here, M2 |
| fx and the formula | Exactly what is typed in that cell. Each reference is coloured the way Excel colours it while you type, and the column it points to is shaded in the same colour |
| The grid | The sheet after you press Enter: column letters across the top, row numbers down the side. The dotted columns are ones we skipped to keep the picture small |
| The line under the grid | How far the formula was copied down, and which rows are shown |
| The tab at the bottom | Which sheet you are on |
Every value in every pane is real. The formula was typed into a workbook holding the actual course file and calculated by a spreadsheet engine; nothing was typed in by hand. So if your Excel shows a different number, the difference is a clue: a range that stops too early, a cell that is not cleaned, a typo in the formula. The lesson is telling you what correct looks like.
A click path looks like this
A click path is a list of things to click, in order. Each numbered line is one action. Ribbon tabs (Home, Insert, Data) come first, then the button on that tab.

8. How Your Pod Works on the Project
- Your pod keeps one shared workbook for Verdant Foods, in the shared folder your tutor gives you. Everyone works in the same file, so everyone can see what has been done.
- The workbook grows by one tab each week: Raw Data and Cleaning Log and Cleaned Data in Week 2, Analysis in Week 3, Dashboard in Week 4.
- The Raw Data tab is never edited. Ever. If something goes wrong, it is how you start again.
- Every change to the data is written in the Cleaning Log: what, which column, how many rows, how. An analyst who cannot say what they changed cannot be trusted with the result.
- Agree in your pod who does which part each week, but make sure every member can explain every tab. Your tutor may ask any of you.
If two pod members edit the same cells at the same time in a shared workbook, one person's work can overwrite the other's. Split the work by tab or by column, and tell your pod in the group chat before you start changing something.
Picture a kitchen. Week 1, you learn what cooking is for and where everything is kept. Week 2, you wash and cut. Week 3, you cook. Week 4, you plate. Week 5, someone tastes it, you adjust the seasoning, and you serve it. TechPlug is the dish you cook with the chef. Verdant Foods is the one you cook with your team.

Quick Recap
Five weeks, twenty classes: two live and two virtual every week. Week 1 is the foundation, with no formulas. Weeks 2 to 4 each add a skill. Week 5 is review and submission. TechPlug is for learning in class. Verdant Foods is for proving it with your pod. Every number in every lesson is real, so a different number on your screen is a clue.
Next, Week 1, Live 1: what data analysis actually is, the four kinds of question it answers, and the five-step workflow every analyst follows, before we open Excel at all.
